Berkeley consists of over 110,000 residents with much colorful history and liberal thinking. Berkeley is known for brilliant minds, protesters and college students lining the streets. Berkeley has always been a haven for avid readers, scientists and mathematicians along with those who continuously thirst for knowledge.

Berkeley is famous for many reasons but was put on the map to the younger generation during the 60's when the "hippie" movement and anti-war protesters came out in force. It was a strange time in history when many individuals questioned authority and created a new way of thinking and living. Many of the ideas were derived from the beat generation meaning "underground or anti-conformist". During this time Martin Luther King won the Nobel Peace Prize, Malcolm X was killed, Timothy Leary invented LSD and the Vietnam war broke out. Berkeley was very active with anti-war protests, experimentation with drugs and the push for peace and love. Berkeley is well known for the famous "peoples park", built in 1969, and the famous Telegraph Avenue where many people who indulge in the hippie lifestyle still congregate today.
